Admissions
Baccalaureate Social Work Program
Who We Are:
The BSW Program is the first public state funded undergraduate social work program in the state of Oregon.
Where We Are:
The BSW Program is located within the School of Social Work, including an MSW, Advanced Standing MSW Program, Distance, and Ph.D. social work program.
What is Our Goal?
It is to educate professional entry-level generalist social workers who will work with individuals, families, and communities in different agencies, settings, organizations and environments to increase social justice, equity, and the eradication of poverty.
What Type of Program Is It?
The Program is based on what we refer to as a "modified cohort model" with students going through all of the core social work courses as a group. This model offers support and other positive aspects to those enrolled in the program.
When Should I Start to Think about Admissions?
As soon as you think social work may be your major contact our BSW Advisor and he can answer many of your questions.
When Do I Apply for Admission?
The BSW Program is a professional program and we only accept students into the program once a year. We do not have “rolling admissions” or “open admission”. If you are currently a junior you may not assume you will get into the program and start in the fall term unless you have applied and have been accepted. You need to start planning in your sophomore year. It is recommended that you take SW 301 Introduction to Social Work before you apply so you can make sure this career choice is the best match with your interests and skills. You can download the application from January 1 of each year and it is due April 1st.
What Is the Curriculum?
The BSW curriculum is delivered within a two year highly structured format; students take at least two social work courses per quarter in addition to other required courses. Some of the courses have to be taken in sequence so you must take that into consideration when planning your education, work, and other commitments. The first year of courses must be completed before you can move on to the field and generalist practice courses in the senior year.
When Do You Start the Program?
The social work coursework begins in the fall quarter.
How Long Is the Program? The program is two years under most circumstances. This program is not considered an evening or weekend program; however, we offer classes throughout the week.
Do We Have A Student Organization?
Yes, students may become active in the BSW Student Organization.
Is the BSW Program Accredited?
No, it is not currently accredited but we were granted “candidacy status” on October 12, 2008, from the Council on Social Work Education, the first step toward accreditation. We are continuing to make progress toward accreditation.
