  • INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE IN SOCIETY University of Cambridge, United Kingdom 5
Key themes addressed by the Conference include the social impacts of science, the values and ethics of science, the pedagogies of science, the knowledge making processes of science, the politics of science and the economics of science. At first glance, the scope and concerns of the Conference are enormous. However, in contrast to conferences with a specialist disciplinary focus, this Conference aims to explore in an interdisciplinary spirit linkages between different areas of concern and practices of investigation. We welcome presentation proposals which range from broad explorations of philosophical, theoretical, methodological and policy questions, to proposals which present finely grained evidence of the connections of science to society in microcosms of research, teaching and practice. As well an impressive international line-up of main speakers, the Conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We would particularly like to invite you to respond to the Conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed International Journal of Science in Society. • Study Abroad based in Munich, Germany beginning on January 4, 2010, and ending on January 12, 2010.
The School of Social Work at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is offering a Study Abroad based in Munich, Germany beginning on January 4, 2010, and ending on January 12, 2010. This course examines human rights within a social work framework, from both European and US perspectives. Field visits and course instruction focuses on political and social human rights, with an emphasis on defining human rights principles as they apply to social work. The location of Munich, Germany highlights the importance of human rights within our current environment, as contemporary human rights arose from the history of this part of the world. Participants in the course have the opportunity to explore concepts of human rights that apply to their own experiences, as well as historical events. This course is ideal for undergraduate or graduate students and professionals interested in learning about different approaches to social problems within a human rights context. The estimated program fee is $2,000, not including airfare from the US to Germany. The program fee includes all necessary transportation relating to the course within Germany, accommodation, and some meals. Three hours of course credit is available from Southern Illinois University, with tuition charged in addition to the program fee. At current rates, three hours of tuition at SIU costs about $900. However, participants outside SIU are not required to take the course for credit. Scholarships are available for SIUC undergraduate students. Dr. Elisabeth Reichert, Professor of Social Work at SIUC and author of several books and articles on human rights, will conduct the course. For further details, please contact Dr. Reichert by email at reichert@siu.edu or contact her by telephone at 618 684 5687. If you are interested in applying for the above study abroad course in Munich, Germany, you will need to do the following: 1. Email Saundra Cawthon at saundra@siu.edu to request an application form. Saundra works with the SIUC International Programs office and handles applications for the program. 2. Along with the application form, you will need to make a $250 deposit by check or money order, which generally is fully refundable if you decide not to participate in the course. The deposit is not refundable once SIUC has incurred costs on your behalf relating to the course. SIUC usually does not incur these costs until the last month before the course begins, so you have plenty of time to decide whether to continue or not. 3. Mail the application and deposit to the address on the application form. Once SIUC receives these items, we will place you on the course list. Also, please inform Saundra whether you wish to take the course for credit. If you do, you will need to complete additional documents for payment of tuition, a cost which is in addition to the program fee of $2,000. The payment of tuition is treated separately from payment of the program fee. 4. The initial $250 deposit will be applied toward the program fee, leaving you with a balance due of $1,750. This balance must be paid in full by the end of November 2009. We will send you a payment schedule after you have sent in the application and initial deposit. So, that?s it. The process is not difficult, but you do need to complete the application and send in the $250 deposit. Once we have those items, we will then provide more information regarding the course. However, a final syllabus for the course will not be available until around November 2009. You can review the previous syllabus on the internet site, but the course structure varies each time. However, the previous syllabus will give you an idea of the course content. If you have any further questions regarding the application procedures, please contact me. Thank you for your interest in the course. Dr. Elisabeth Reichert (reichert@siu.edu) Professor of Social Work Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (618) 684 5687

  • EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEW DIRECTIONS IN THE HUMANITIES
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA 29 June - 2 July 2010 We are very pleased to be holding this year's conference in Los Angeles, California. Los Angeles is one of the most diverse and dynamic cities in the United States, attracting immigrants and visitors from around the world to its wide range of attractions, activities and professional opportunities. Although Los Angeles is perhaps most well recognized as the center of U.S. movie and television production, its cultural role exceeds that of its most famous industry. Its music, literary and visual and performing arts communities, for instance, reflect the diverse perspectives of Angelinos and are internationally influential. The Los Angeles area is home to some of the best galleries and museums in the country and to distinguished centers for humanities research, such as the Getty Center, the Huntington Library and the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. The city is also a center of higher education, boasting many of the finest colleges and universities in the United States, including the host of this year's International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The Humanities Conference provides a space for dialogue and for the publication of new knowledge that builds on the past traditions of the humanities whilst setting a renewed agenda for their future. • SEVENTEENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LEARNING Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong
The International Conference on Learning is for anyone with an interest in, and concern for, education at any of its levels and in any of its forms, from early childhood, to schools, to higher education and lifelong learning - and in any of its sites, from home to school to university to workplace. In present-day Hong Kong, traditional Chinese practices are met with a Westerly modern way of life. In similar fashion, education, too, has developed under this analogous balancing act, having integrated a western-style education model with a Colonial Hong Kong school system of education by the mid-nineteenth century. The Hong Kong Institute of Education, in the same vein, brings teacher education into the 20th and 21st centuries - the result of merging the five former Colleges of Education in 1994. Learning Conference plenary speakers include: Katerine Bielaczyc, National Institute of Education, Singapore Yasmin B. Kafai, Journal of the Learning Sciences Kerry Kennedy, Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong Samuel Leong, Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong Bob Lingard, The University of Queensland, Queensland, Australia The Conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We would particularly like to invite you to respond to the Conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in The International Journal of Learning. If you are unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication. • FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE ARTS IN SOCIETY -- University of Sydney, Australia
FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE ARTS IN SOCIETY 22-25 July 2010 The International Conference on the Arts in Society and The International Journal of the Arts in Society provide an intellectual platform for the arts and art practices, and enable an interdisciplinary conversation on the role of the arts in society. They are intended as a place for critical engagement, examination and experimentation of ideas that connect the arts to their ontexts in the world - in studios and classrooms, in galleries and museums, on stage, on the streets and in communities. The 2010 Conference will coincide with the Sydney Biennale, and will be held in conjunction with featured exhibitions and programs. The Biennale of Sydney was created in 1973 as an international showcase for contemporary art. Its aim was to develop and present a program that challenged traditional thinking and encouraged innovative, creative expression. Within its first decade of exhibitions (1973-82) the Biennale of Sydney was among the first to celebrate Australia's cultural and ethnic diversity; the first to show indigenous art in an international contemporary art context; the first to focus on Asia and the contemporary art of the region. It was among the first to present to wide audiences the art of the social change movements which transformed Australian society in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The occasion of the Sydney Biennale provides an opportunity for the Conference to serve as a node in the larger phenomenon of fairs, festivals, and their networks. As such, the Arts Conference aims to discover what values, instincts and common ground may exist within the arts and their practices and sites of reception around the world. Your participation shapes the Conference itself. As well as an impressive line-up of plenary speakers, the Conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We would particularly like to invite you to respond to the Conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in The International Journal of the Arts in Society. If you are unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication.
