Admissions
M.S.W. Program - Portland

The M.S.W. Program-Portland Option is offered through courses taken on the Portland PSU campus and can be completed in a number of ways—see details on Study Options. Students may enroll in the M.S.W. program in Fall term only.  We admit students only once each year.  We do not offer deferment of admission, but retain applications for one year, for use in readmission.

Application to the MSW program is a two step process.  Applicants will need to complete the School of Social Work application and the Portland State University.  You will find links to each application below.  Some program options require supplemental materials.  Please see the program option links below to access information on program requirements and supplemental materials.

Step 1: Apply to the School of Social Work

The application is available in three formats:

  • Downloadable Application Packet in PDF format. Once downloaded and printed, the application is completed and submitted via postal mail. You will also need to apply to Portland State University separately -- see Step 2 below.
  • Online Application. This version allows you to save a partially completed application form and complete it later. Please Note: This does not officially submit your application to the School; rather your application must be sent by postal mail with your signature and application materials. If you choose this method, download the Instructions, Reference Form, GPA Calculation Worksheet and Checklist (all PDF format).
  • A paper packet mailed to you. To request a hard copy of the packet, email us at mswadm@pdx.edu. Allow 2 to 3 weeks for delivery. Please write "paper application 2010 request" in the email's subject line. The application is completed and submitted via postal mail.

Step 2: Apply to Portland State University

In addition to the application to the School of Social Work, you must apply separately to Portland State University's graduate program. Use the University Graduate Application Form (PDF format). You must print the application and mail it to the University as instructed on the PSU Graduate Application form. The Graduate Application may be completed on the computer and submitted electronically at Graduate Application Apply Online .

Supplementary Materials and Procedures.

Special circumstances may require additional materials or procedures as follows:

  • Advanced Standing Students. Individuals who have completed a B.S.W. (Bachelors of Social Work) may be eligible to apply for the Advanced Standing Option, whereby the M.S.W. can be completed in one year. See Applying for the Advanced Standing Option (PDF). A supplementary application form is required for Advanced Standing applicants. This form is available online.
  • Transfer Students. Individuals who have been attending an accredited Master of Social Work program may apply to transfer social work graduate coursework to PSU's School of Social Work. See Transfer Students (PDF).
  • International Students. Individuals who are citizens of countries other than the United States are welcome to apply. See International Students (PDF).
  • Reapplicants. Individuals who applied to the program within the last year can reactivate the application. Those who applied before that will need to submit a complete application. See Reapplication (PDF).

Combined Degrees and Certificates.

Several options are available for competing the M.S.W. along with an additional certifcate or degree. These require supplementary application materials and/or procedures.

  • Graduate Certificate in Gerontlogy. Students may complete the interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Gerontology offered in cooperation with PSU’s Institute on Aging with only a few credits more than the 78 credits needed for the M.S.W. Program. See the following PDF documents: Information on the Certificate; Information on Applying (available September).
  • M.S.W./Master in Public Health Combined Degree. Beginning in Fall 2008, students will be able to complete an M.S.W./M.P.H. Combined Degree in three years of full-time study. See MSW/MPH Option (PDF).
  • M.S.W./Ph.D. Combined Degree. Students who have a master’s degree in a field related to Social Work may complete a 136 credit combined M.S.W. and Ph.D. Program. To be eligible for the combined program, applicants must meet the admission requirements and be accepted in both programs. Typically, the M.S.W. degree is awarded after three years of study in the combined program. Most students take an additional one to two years to complete Ph.D. Program requirements. In the combined program, several Ph.D. courses are counted in place of M.S.W. requirements. See Information on the Combined M.S.W./Ph.D Degrees. Information on Applying (available September).
