Advising
M.S.W. Program - Portland

At the beginning of each academic year, each student is assigned to a member of the faculty who serves as her/his advisor. In most cases, the same member of the faculty will act as a liaison to the student's field practicum agency. Responsibilities of the advisor include providing educational guidance in selection of a student's course of study; orienting the student to the school, its curriculum, and its policies; identifying and consulting with the student on problems which may interfere with the student's educational progress; and representing the student's interests when necessary. The school recommends meeting with advisors at least once per term.Advisor contact information can be accessed from our Faculty/Staff pages.

An MSW Advisory Checklist on the Forms Page is available to assist you and your advisor in planning your course of study and monitor your progress toward graduation.

Advising FAQs

Listed below are some frequently asked advising-related questions. If you have additional questions please contact your advisor or Jodene Rudolf, in the Office of Student Affairs at jodene@pdx.edu or 503-725-3949.

I've just been admitted to the program. When will I be assigned an advisor and when will I be able to meet with my advisor?

Over the course of the summer our field education director and staff work together to assign advisors to our incoming students. Students will meet their assigned advisors during the New Student Welcoming just prior to the beginning of fall term.

Who can answer my advising questions over the summer?

Janet Putnam, Director of Student Affairs, can answer any advising questions over the summer. E-mail questions to: putnamj@pdx.edu or contact Janet by phone at 503-725-5021.

How often should I meet with my advisor?

It is suggested that students meet with their respective advisor at least once per term.

Is my academic advisor the same as my field liaison?

Yes. The SSW faculty member who is assigned to provide academic advising to the student serves as the liaison between the School and field instructor/placement agency.

Will I have the same advisor for the entire time in the program?

No. Because your advisor serves as the liaison between the School and the placement agency your assigned advisor changes with your field placement.

How do I know which section of Field Instruction (SW 500) to register for?

In fall term, campus students register for the section of Field Instruction taught by Ellen Masterson, Director of Field Education. After the beginning of fall term, the SSW will change your registration for SW500 to the correct advisor/liaison.

How can I reach my advisor?

Advisor and other faculty and staff contact information is available online at the Faculty/Staff pages. Contact information is also available at the front desk located in the SSW reception area.

I'm a part-time continuing student going into my first year of placement. When/how will I learn who my new advisor is?

The Director of Student Affairs assigns advisors to newly admitted students over the course of the summer. Students are notified of their advisor's name prior to the beginning of the academic year.
