Technology
M.S.W. Program - Portland

Tech Links

Every year the School of Social Work makes more intensive use of technology, in the same way that professional Social Workers increasingly use technology in their jobs. All M.S.W. students are expected to develop basic computer skills in such tasks as email sending and receiving, document processing, and information retrieval. Both PSU and the SSW offer a number of technology resources:

Computer Labs

The SSW maintains the Robert Holloway Computer Lab located in the SSW office suite, 400 University Center Building. The lab has 20 workstations that use the Windows XP operating system with access to the internet and web. There are no Apple computers. Each workstation has the following software: Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, Powerpoint), SPSS, Internet Explorer, and FireFox. The lab is open to SSW students during normal business hours. However, if it has been reserved for a class, it is open only to students enrolled in that class. Reserved times are posted on the doorway to the lab. Use of the SSW computers is governed by Portland State University's Acceptable Use Policy and by the SSW Computer Lab Policies. Also see our Computer FAQs page.

In addition, the University has a number of computer labs throughout campus that are open during a wider range of hours. Information can be found on the PSU computer labs page.

Computer Presentation Equipment

Notebook computers and LCD projector equipment can be checked out from the SSW on a very limited basis for class presentations. Reservation is by sign-up. Contact SSW reception personnel for details.

PSU Computer Accounts

Once registered, M.S.W. students can obtain a free PSU account which provides email services, access to computer labs, and other advantages. This is generally referred to as an "Odin" account. The process for obaining one is described on the PSU Computer Accounts page.

M.S.W. Listserv

All M.S.W. program information is shared with our M.S.W. campus students via the M.S.W. student listserv. Students are added to the list by the listserv account manager, Jodene Rudolf. Only PSU e-mail addresses are used for the listserv because, unlike personal e-mail accounts, the PSU e-mail address remains the same throughout a student's entire time at the university. Note: All active M.S.W. campus students are required to submit their PSU e-mail addresses to the listserv account manager and are responsible for checking their PSU e-mail on a timely basis. All program information, including information on registration, field education, class scheduling and other critical announcements, is shared with students via the M.S.W. listserv. The M.S.W. student listserv is our primary method of communicating all vital program information with students.

To be included in the list-serv, first obtain an Odin account which will give you a PSU email address, then send your name and PSU email address to Jodene Rudolf, in the Office of Student Affairs.
