Technology
M.S.W. Portland Campus Program

Tech Links

Every year the GSSW makes more intensive use of technology, in the same way that professional Social Workers increasingly use technology in their jobs. All M.S.W. students are expected to develop basic computer skills in such tasks as email sending and receiving, document processing, and information retrieval. Both PSU and the GSSW offer a number of technology resources:

Computer Labs

The GSSW maintains the Robert Holloway Computer Lab located in the GSSW office suite, 400 University Center Building. The lab has 20 workstations that use the Windows XP operating system with access to the internet and WWW. There are no Apple computers. Each workstation has the following software: Microsoft Office 2003 (Word, Access, Excel, Powerpoint), SPSS 13.0, Internet Explorer, FireFox, and EndNote 8.0. The lab is open to GSSW students during normal business hours. However, if it has been reserved for a class, it is open only to students enrolled in that class. Reserved times are posted on the doorway to the lab. Use of the GSSW Computers is governed by Portland State University's Acceptable Use Policy and by the SSW Computer Lab Policies. Also see our Computer FAQs page.

In addition, the University has a number of computer labs throughout campus that are open during a wider range of hours. Information can be found on the PSU computer labs page.

Computer Presentation Equipment

Notebook computers and LCD projector equipment can be checked out from the GSSW on a very limited basis for class presentations. Reservation is by sign-up. Contact GSSW reception personnel for details.

PSU Computer Accounts

Once registered, M.S.W. students can obtain a free PSU account which provides email services, access to computer labs, and other advantages. This is generally referred to as an "Odin" account. The process for obaining one is described on the PSU Computer Accounts page.

M.S.W. Listserv

Important program information is shared with our students via the M.S.W. Student Listserv. Students subscribe to the list using their PSU e-mail address. The PSU e-mail address is used because, unlike personal e-mail accounts, the PSU e-mail address remains the same throughout a student's entire time at the university. Students are strongly encouraged to sign up for the listserv, since this is the only way that we communicate important information about requirements, events, and activities. To sign up, obtain and Odin account which will give you an PSU email address and send this address to Jodene Rudolf in the Office of Student Affairs.

GSSW Website

Almost all information pertinent to students is posted on this website. Our URL is: http://www.ssw.pdx.edu. Students are encouraged to become familiar with this site, bookmark it on their home computer, and check it often.

After receiving your login information you will need to submit your PSU e-mail address to Jodene Rudolf in the GSSW Office of Student Affairs. You may use the Change of Information Form on our secure site to submit the information or e-mail Jodene at jodene@pdx.edu. At that time your information will be added to the M.S.W. Student List-Serv and you will begin receiving program announcements as well as the M.S.W. Student Affairs Newsletter.

See FAQs for more information on technology.
