Coursework
M.S.W. Program - Portland

To assure a common base for social work practice the faculty has identified a required foundation curriculum to be completed by all students, regardless of their choice of concentration. The foundation includes courses in Diversity and Social Justice, Social Welfare Policy and Services, Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Social Work Research, and Generalist Social Work Practice. Three terms of concurrent foundation field placement are an integral part of the foundation curriculum.

During the winter term of the year in which students are enrolled in generalist practice courses, they select a concentration (Direct Human Services, Community Based Practice, or Social Services Administration and Leadership). The option chosen determines the required practice courses, selection of advanced HBSE and practice electives, and provides direction to learning experiences in the concurrent field placement. Students also take advanced elective coursework in research and social policy. Assignments in these electives will support the student’s concentration. See:

We offer numerous sections of required courses. Day and evening sections of all required foundation courses and many advanced elective courses are available. We can guarantee that all students will be able to register for each required class. But we cannot guarantee that students will be able to register for every course or their preferred time and day.
