Funding your Education
Ph.D. Program
Financial aid is available in the form of grants, loans, scholarships, and graduate assistantships. Eligibility requirements vary, but are usually based on a combination of merit and need. The School of Social Work makes every effort to assist qualified students in securing the resources necessary to pursue their educational goals. In recent years, graduate assistantships and tuition remission have been available for all students who wanted them.

Grants, Loans & Scholarships
A separate Financial Aid document (in PDF format) lists scholarships and other funding resources. Additional information is available through the PSU Financial Aid Office.
Graduate Research Assistantships and Research Assistant Positions
There are a number of graduate research assistantships available to Ph.D. students. These assistantships may involve 6-19 hours of work per week and may be awarded through the School or may be through employment on a research project at the Regional Research Institute for Human Services. Salary varies, but is usually in the range of $3,500 per quarter in addition to a tuition waiver. Tuition waivers are based on the number of credit hours for which the student is enrolled and the number of hours worked. These arrangements are individually made once applicants have been admitted. Sometimes there are also opportunities for part time employment for research assistants at hourly wage or negotiated salary on research projects at the Regional Research Institute for Human Services.
The Center for the Improvement of Services to Children and Families ( formerly the "Child Welfare Partnership") provides paid research opportunities for students enrolled in the MSW and Ph.D. Programs through graduate research assistantships. A teaching assistantship that involves work with the MSW educational program is often available to Ph.D. students.
