The Requested Page is not Available

Sorry, but the page that you're looking for on the School of Social Work's website is not available. This may be due to one of a number of reasons...

  • As of July 31, 2008, our site has been redesigned, hopefully to make things easier to find. You may need to re-establish old bookmarks because links from the old site will not work. For example, Field Education pages were once under "MSW Program" but are now under their own main link at left. Also, information on the M.S.W. Program - Distance Option is now available under the corresponding link at left.
  • Application materials are available only during parts of the year. Application forms and instructions are typically available only during the part of the year when they are being accepted. For example, application materials for entrance into the M.S.W. program are available in Fall for the cohort of students who will begin courses in Fall of the following year. When the application period is closed -- typically Feburary 1 -- application materials are taken off the website. See FAQs regarding applications and admissions for the M.S.W. Program.
  • Some pages have been removed when they've become out-of-date or obsolete. If you need further help, please see the information on the Contact Us page.
  • Thanks for your patience!

Gay Adoption
Exploring Child Welfare by Joan Shireman

Adoption Topics

For many years, adoptions of children by gay and lesbian parents were done as single parents, with one partner of a gay or lesbian couple becoming the legal parent of the adopted child. In recent years, many gay and lesbian individuals and couples have not been willing to adopt in this way.

Placements in gay or lesbian homes are controversial. There is a moral concern about the home environment expressed by some religious groups. Morality is a very personal issue, and the morality of denying a child an adoptive home also needs to be considered. Additionally, there is a fear that a child in a homosexual home may be molested, or may grow up to be homosexual; neither of these fears is supported by facts. Nevertheless, there are legal barriers in many states to joint adoptions by gay or lesbian couples.

These adoptions have so recently surfaced in the adoption statistics that there are no outcome studies. However, evaluations of gay and lesbian homes indicate that these are much like other homes in parenting. There will be special issues for children adopted by gay and lesbian parents, however, mainly concerning their ability to accept and explain the different family structure.
