The Requested Page is not Available

Sorry, but the page that you're looking for on the School of Social Work's website is not available. This may be due to one of a number of reasons...

  • As of July 31, 2008, our site has been redesigned, hopefully to make things easier to find. You may need to re-establish old bookmarks because links from the old site will not work. For example, Field Education pages were once under "MSW Program" but are now under their own main link at left. Also, information on the M.S.W. Program - Distance Option is now available under the corresponding link at left.
  • Application materials are available only during parts of the year. Application forms and instructions are typically available only during the part of the year when they are being accepted. For example, application materials for entrance into the M.S.W. program are available in Fall for the cohort of students who will begin courses in Fall of the following year. When the application period is closed -- typically Feburary 1 -- application materials are taken off the website. See FAQs regarding applications and admissions for the M.S.W. Program.
  • Some pages have been removed when they've become out-of-date or obsolete. If you need further help, please see the information on the Contact Us page.
  • Thanks for your patience!

Open Adoption
Exploring Child Welfare by Joan Shireman

Adoption Topics

Open adoption is an umbrella term, used to cover a variety of arrangements, ranging from sharing of identifying information to continuing contact of birth parents with the adoptive family. The degree of openness is decided by the birth parents and adoptive parents, and usually spelled out in a contract or agreement at the time of the adoption.

Open adoptions developed as adoption agencies recognized the interest of adult adoptees in discovering their biological relatives, and as birth mothers began to assert their wish to have a role in selecting adoptive families, and often to maintain some degree of contact. Also, adoptive placements older children who knew their birth relatives were by definition open, and often there was a grandparent or other relative who wished to maintain contact.

There are benefits and risks in open adoptions for birth parents, adoptive parents, and the adopted child. Perhaps the greatest benefit accrues to the child, who grows in an atmosphere in which the biological family is accepted into the adoptive family, with the child as a part of both. Open adoptions are new enough that there are as yet no longitudinal studies of its effects.
