The Requested Page is not Available

Sorry, but the page that you're looking for on the School of Social Work's website is not available. This may be due to one of a number of reasons...

  • As of July 31, 2008, our site has been redesigned, hopefully to make things easier to find. You may need to re-establish old bookmarks because links from the old site will not work. For example, Field Education pages were once under "MSW Program" but are now under their own main link at left. Also, information on the M.S.W. Program - Distance Option is now available under the corresponding link at left.
  • Application materials are available only during parts of the year. Application forms and instructions are typically available only during the part of the year when they are being accepted. For example, application materials for entrance into the M.S.W. program are available in Fall for the cohort of students who will begin courses in Fall of the following year. When the application period is closed -- typically Feburary 1 -- application materials are taken off the website. See FAQs regarding applications and admissions for the M.S.W. Program.
  • Some pages have been removed when they've become out-of-date or obsolete. If you need further help, please see the information on the Contact Us page.
  • Thanks for your patience!

Single Adoption
Exploring Child Welfare by Joan Shireman

Adoption Topics

Though single parents have raised children throughout history, professional adoption workers were hesitant about endorsing formal adoptions by single parents, believing that children deserved a two parent family. Changing times have brought increasing numbers of single parents by choice, and society has accepted these families. Now, as agencies search for homes for increasingly difficult children, single parent adoptions are quite common. There is some evidence that single parents may still have difficulty adopting young children, and that there is a tendency to place older and difficult children in these homes.

Though there is little research concerning single parent adoptions, what there is shows successful families. Indeed, single parent homes may have particular strengths for some children who have difficulty dealing with complex relationship patterns. The major concern about single parent adoptions is the economic difficulty of a single wage earner, particularly a woman. The support system available to a single parent in a crisis also needs careful evaluation; the evaluation should probably include not only family and friends, but also organized day care and recreational opportunities available for children.
